What's it like to live in Westworth Village?

Westworth Village isn't part of Fort Worth. It's a small city of its own, incorporated in 1941 and tucked into west Fort Worth right next to Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base. It has its own mayor, police department, and tax rate, and it owns a public golf course.

A lot of buyers don't realize they've crossed a city line until they see the tax bill. Practically, it feels like part of the west side. The differences show up in who runs things and what you pay for them, so that's where I'd focus.

Where is Westworth Village?

The city covers about two square miles along the Trinity River, roughly five miles west of downtown Fort Worth by the city's own description. City Hall is at 311 Burton Hill Road. (City of Westworth Village)

The base is right next door, and Fort Worth neighborhoods like Ridgmar and Burton Hill are close by. Highway 183 and White Settlement Road are the main routes through, and I-30 is a few minutes south.

A short history of Westworth Village

The city was incorporated in 1941, the same year the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce handed over land to the federal government for what became Carswell Air Force Base. The base drove much of the town's growth. (Handbook of Texas)

The bigger modern turning point came in 1998, when Carswell became Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base. Westworth Village took on about 400 acres of former federal property and 500 abandoned houses and set out to turn them into new development. The city built its municipal complex, with city offices and the police department, in 2008, and opened Melva Campbell Park in 2022 with play equipment, pavilions, and a lighted walking path. What's different about living in a separate city?

This is the part that matters most for buyers.

  • Your city taxes go to Westworth Village, not Fort Worth. Rates change every year, so check the current one on the city's budget and tax rate page and plug it into your payment estimate.
  • Homestead exemptions are set by the city too. Westworth Village lists a 20% general homestead exemption, $50,000 for homeowners over 65, and $30,000 for disabled persons. These apply to the city's portion of your bill, not the school or county portions.
  • City services are local. Westworth Village has its own police department and handles its own city services. If something goes wrong on your street, you're calling a small city hall, not a big-city 311 line.
  • Local government is small and close. City Council meets the second Tuesday of each month.

If you're new to how Texas property taxes stack up between the city, county, and school district, my post on how property taxes work in Tarrant County breaks it down.

Hawks Creek Golf Club

The city owns and operates Hawks Creek Golf Club at 6520 White Settlement Road as a public course. It started life as the Carswell Air Force Base golf course, was renovated in 2000, and reopened as Hawks Creek in 2002. (PaperCity) A 2014 makeover added a new driving range, and the course has since renovated its bunkers. (City of Westworth Village)

For a town this size, owning a public course is a nice perk.

What kind of homes are in Westworth Village?

Mostly single-family houses, with a range of ages. Some go back to the Carswell years, and others are newer. Because the city is small, inventory is limited, and two houses a few streets apart can be very different in age and condition.

Also watch the address. A listing that mentions "Burton Hill" or the west side can be in either city. The appraisal district record tells you which city a house is in. Check it before you estimate taxes.

What schools serve Westworth Village?

Westworth Village is served by Fort Worth ISD, and the city lists Burton Hill Elementary, Stripling Middle School, and Arlington Heights High School as its area schools. (City of Westworth Village) Assigned campuses go by address, so look up the specific house on the district's School Finder.

What's near Westworth Village?

All of these were open when I checked in fall 2026:

  • Hawks Creek Golf Club, 6520 White Settlement Rd.
  • Walmart Supercenter, 6770 Westworth Blvd, right in town.
  • Airfield Falls Conservation Park, with its trailhead on Pumphrey Drive. It connects to the Trinity Trails and leads to what the trail system calls Tarrant County's largest natural waterfall.
  • Ridglea Theater, 6025 Camp Bowie Blvd, for concerts and shows.
  • Campisi's, 6150 Camp Bowie Blvd.
  • Kincaid's Hamburgers, 4901 Camp Bowie Blvd.

Nearby Ridgmar Mall, on the Fort Worth side at I-30 and Highway 183, was sold in 2026 and is planned to become a logistics campus. My Ridgmar guide covers the details.

Pros and cons of Westworth Village

Reasons to buy here: a small city that's easy to reach, a city-owned public golf course, and a quick trip to Camp Bowie and the Cultural District. It's also an easy commute for anyone working at the base.

Reasons to think twice: limited inventory, so you may wait for the right house. A small city government has fewer resources than Fort Worth for big projects. And you live next to an active military airfield. If you're sensitive to aircraft noise, visit at a few different times of day before you commit.

If you're weighing a small-city setup against living inside Fort Worth proper, my post on living in Fort Worth vs. the suburbs may help you think it through.
