What's it like to live in Ridglea North?

Morris E. Berney Park sits at the center of Ridglea North, a west Fort Worth neighborhood just north of Camp Bowie Boulevard with homes ranging from the 1930s through the mid-century years. The park is also where the neighborhood association holds its get-togethers.

What I notice most is the variety. Because the neighborhood was built in stages over a couple of decades, one block can have a small 1940s cottage, a 1950s ranch, and a much larger two-story. That makes it one of the more interesting places on the west side to shop for a house.

Where is Ridglea North?

Camp Bowie Boulevard on the south, Calmont Avenue on the north, Bryant Irvin Road on the east, and Olive Street on the west. (Ridglea North Neighborhood Association)

Ridgmar is directly north, across I-30. The Ridglea Theater and the restaurants along Camp Bowie are at the neighborhood's southern edge, and I-30 is a couple of minutes away.

How is Ridglea North different from the other Ridgleas?

It's the oldest of the three and the most mixed. Ridglea Hills, across Camp Bowie to the south, is larger and mostly 1950s and '60s mid-century homes. Ridglea Country Club Estates is a newer golf course community with a single entrance that started in 1966 off Southwest Boulevard. Ridglea North was platted decades before either one, and its park-centered layout gives it a different rhythm.

A short history of Ridglea North

Developers Morris E. Berney and Bernie L. Anderson platted Ridglea in 1928. Their plan was large two-story homes around and close to the park that now carries Berney's name. The first houses went up in 1930, and then the Great Depression stalled things for years.

During World War II, smaller homes were built for families working at the Convair bomber plant and Tarrant Field. In the late 1940s, Luther Bros. & Wilson bought the Ridglea Addition north of Camp Bowie, the part now known as Ridglea North, and building picked back up. (Ridglea North Neighborhood Association) That stop-and-start history explains why the house sizes and styles change so much from block to block.

The Fort Worth Report has profiled the neighborhood more than once in its "Where I Live" series, including a 2021 piece on Berney Park and a 2025 resident profile.

What kind of homes are in Ridglea North?

A mix, and that's the point. There are a few homes from the original 1930s push, smaller wartime houses from the 1940s, and plenty of postwar and mid-century ranches. The association describes it as a mix of architectural styles and sizes. Mature trees cover most of the neighborhood.

The smaller houses can be a good entry point for buyers who want this location without stretching to a bigger home. The flip side is that some of them have been heavily expanded over the years, sometimes well and sometimes not. Ask for permits on additions, and have the inspector look closely at where old and new sections meet.

Berney Park and the neighborhood association

Morris E. Berney Park sits in the middle of the neighborhood, and the association calls it the heart of Ridglea North. The Ridglea North Neighborhood Association is active. The Fort Worth Report's 2021 story described events through the year like a Fourth of July family parade, National Night Out in October, and "Cocoa & Carols" in the park in December.

What's near Ridglea North?

Location is a big plus here. You can walk or drive to a handful of long-standing spots, all open when I checked in fall 2026:

  • Ridglea Theater, 6025 Camp Bowie Blvd, for concerts, comedy, and movie nights.
  • Campisi's, 6150 Camp Bowie Blvd, Italian and pizza.
  • Szechuan Chinese Restaurant, 5712 Locke Ave.
  • Fred's Texas Cafe, 7101 Camp Bowie W Blvd.
  • Ridglea Library, 3628 Bernie Anderson Ave, a Fort Worth Public Library branch built in 1967.
  • Swiss Pastry Shop, 3936 W Vickery Blvd.

Farther east on Camp Bowie you've got Kincaid's, Blue Bonnet Bakery, and Lucile's, then the Cultural District. Hawks Creek Golf Club in Westworth Village is a short drive north.

What schools serve Ridglea North?

Fort Worth ISD. I don't list specific campuses here because zoning goes by address and can change. Look up the house on the district's School Finder.

Who is Ridglea North a good fit for?

People who want a park to be part of daily life. If your ideal evening is walking the dog to the park and running into neighbors, Ridglea North makes a lot of sense.

It also suits buyers who like older homes but don't want the rules of a historic district. Same for anyone who wants to be close to Camp Bowie without being right on it.

Where it's less ideal: if you want a newer house with an open floor plan, you'll likely be looking at a remodel or a rebuild. Houses close to Camp Bowie and Bryant Irvin pick up more traffic noise. And it's a compact neighborhood, so there are only so many houses to choose from. When the right one comes up, you'll want your financing lined up already.
