What's it like to live in Foster Park?

A city park with a duck pond, at Trail Lake Drive and South Drive, sits at the center of Foster Park, a compact southwest Fort Worth neighborhood of mostly 1950s and 1960s homes. It sits just north of I-20, between Hulen Street and Trail Lake.

It's small. About two thousand people live here, on roughly six-tenths of a square mile. That size is part of the appeal. The park is never more than a few blocks away.

Where is Foster Park?

The Foster Park Neighborhood Association, registered with the city, lists its boundaries as the park, Hildring, and Westdale on the north; Loop 820 (I-20) and Granbury Road on the south; Trail Lake Drive on the east; and Hulen Street on the west. (City of Fort Worth)

It's in the 76109 ZIP code. Overton Park is north along the same greenbelt, Westcliff is to the northeast, and Wedgwood is directly south across I-20.

Where the name comes from

J.E. Foster was the developer. His company, J.E. Foster and Son, also developed the Westcliff Shopping Center, whose first stores opened in 1949. (Cinema Treasures)

On November 18, 1952, the city's park board accepted 5.4 acres at Trail Lake and South Drive as a gift from Foster, the developer of the adjacent subdivision of the same name. More land followed in 1953, and by 1954 the park had picnic tables, swings, and a slide. A 1957 city plan imagined it as the entrance to a parkway that never got built. (City of Fort Worth)

What kind of homes are in Foster Park?

Mid-century houses, mostly. The biggest share was built in the 1950s and the next biggest in the 1960s, and only a small number are newer than 2010. (City-Data)

That last part matters. Unlike Tanglewood, Foster Park doesn't show much new construction in the numbers, so most streets still look the way they were built. It also means you're buying a 60-to-70-year-old house in most cases. For current prices, go by recent sales on the specific street rather than neighborhood averages.

Before you buy, get a thorough inspection with a sewer scope. Which brings me to the next section.

Is there construction coming to Foster Park?

Yes. The city has a water and sewer replacement project for the Foster Park area, bounded by Westdale Drive, South Drive, I-20, and Hulen Street. It includes removing old cast iron water mains and installing new water and sewer lines on streets including Westlake Drive, Lanark Avenue, Bilglade Road, Selkirk Drive West, and Whitfield Avenue. It was in final design when I checked, with completion expected in January 2028. (City of Fort Worth)

Short term, that likely means torn-up streets and detours. Long term, new public lines are a plus. If you're buying on one of those streets, ask your agent to factor the timeline into your move-in plans.

What about the park and flooding?

Foster Park is about 12 acres today, at 3725 South Drive. It runs along a creek bed and has a duck pond, 0.78 miles of trails, a playground, a ball field, a basketball court, a fitness station, and grills. It also connects with Kellis Park to the south and Overton Park to the north to form a long greenbelt. (City of Fort Worth)

Any house near a creek deserves a flood check. Look up the address on FEMA's flood map and get an insurance quote during your option period.

What schools serve Foster Park?

Fort Worth ISD. Zoning depends on the address and has shifted in this part of town before, so check the specific house on the district's School Finder.

What's near Foster Park?

Hulen Street and the Westcliff center cover most of the basics. These were open when I checked in fall 2026:

  • Café Bella, 3548 S Hills Ave in the Westcliff Shopping Center
  • Albertsons and Ace Hardware, also at Westcliff
  • Mexican Inn Cafe, 5017 S Hulen St
  • Barnes & Noble, 4801 Overton Ridge Blvd
  • Hulen Mall, 4800 S Hulen St
  • Ming Wok, 5346 Trail Lake Dr, just across I-20 in Wedgwood

And of course the trail. Head north from the park and you can follow the greenbelt up through Overton Park toward the Trinity Trails.

Who Foster Park suits, and who it doesn't

It suits buyers who want a quiet, small neighborhood with a park at the center and easy I-20 access. People who like original mid-century houses tend to appreciate that the streets haven't been rebuilt.

It's less of a fit if you want new construction, or if road noise is a dealbreaker on the blocks closest to the interstate. And with the pipe project coming, a buyer who needs a calm street right away should look at the timeline closely.

Compared with Wedgwood across the highway, Foster Park is far smaller, with somewhat older homes on average. Wedgwood gives you more choices. Foster Park gives you the park.
